Everything you need to know about MSME/Udyam registration in India. Discover the classification criteria, step-by-step registration process, documents required, and the extensive benefits available to MSMEs.

What Is MSME?

MSME stands for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises—a classification defined by the Government of India under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act, 2006. MSMEs form the backbone of India's economy, contributing approximately 30% to GDP, 45% to manufacturing output, and 40% to total exports.

The government actively supports MSMEs through various schemes, subsidies, and policy benefits available exclusively to registered enterprises. Udyam Registration is the current online system for MSME registration, replacing the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) process.

MSME Classification Criteria

As per the revised classification effective from July 1, 2020, MSMEs are categorised based on investment in plant and machinery/equipment and annual turnover:

CategoryInvestment LimitAnnual Turnover Limit
Micro EnterpriseUp to ₹1 CroreUp to ₹5 Crore
Small EnterpriseUp to ₹10 CroreUp to ₹50 Crore
Medium EnterpriseUp to ₹50 CroreUp to ₹250 Crore

Both criteria must be satisfied simultaneously. The investment and turnover figures are automatically validated through the Income Tax and GST databases linked to the Udyam portal.

Who Can Register as an MSME?

The following entities are eligible for MSME/Udyam registration:

  • Proprietorship firms
  • Partnership firms
  • Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs)
  • Private Limited Companies
  • Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs)
  • Co-operative societies
  • Trusts and associations engaged in manufacturing or service activities

Both manufacturing and service enterprises are eligible for registration.

Udyam Registration Process: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Visit the Udyam Portal

Go to the official Udyam Registration portal at udyamregistration.gov.in. This is the only official government portal for MSME registration—no fees are charged.

Step 2: Enter Aadhaar Details

Enter the Aadhaar number and name of the proprietor, partner, or authorised person. For companies and LLPs, the GSTIN and PAN of the organisation are required.

Step 3: OTP Verification

An OTP is sent to the mobile number linked to the Aadhaar. Enter the OTP to verify your identity.

Step 4: Fill in Business Details

Provide the following information:

  • Name and type of enterprise
  • PAN and GSTIN (if applicable)
  • Date of commencement of business
  • Business address
  • Number of employees
  • Investment in plant and machinery/equipment
  • Primary business activity (NIC code)

Step 5: Auto-Validation

The portal automatically validates your investment and turnover data from the Income Tax and GST systems. This determines your MSME classification (Micro, Small, or Medium).

Step 6: Receive Udyam Registration Certificate

Upon successful submission, the Udyam Registration Certificate is generated with a permanent Udyam Registration Number (URN) starting with "UDYAM-XX-00-0000000". The certificate is emailed to the registered email ID.
